Description
HDR10 and HDR400 refer to different aspects of HDR. HDR10 is a format that tells the display how HDR video or games are encoded and presented. It supports a wider brightness range and 10-bit color information, but HDR10 by itself doesn't guarantee that the monitor is actually capable of producing impressive HDR. HDR10 vs HDR400 vs HDR1000 is an important comparison when choosing a monitor for HDR content.
DisplayHDR 400, on the other hand, is a VESA certification for the display itself. HDR400 generally means the monitor can reach at least around 400 nits in specified HDR conditions and meets other minimum requirements. It's considered an entry-level HDR standard.
So, if a monitor says “HDR10”, that doesn't necessarily mean it has good HDR. A monitor with DisplayHDR 400 is at least certified to meet certain hardware requirements, but HDR400 can still look fairly modest, especially if the monitor has poor contrast and no local dimming. For genuinely noticeable HDR, higher levels such as DisplayHDR 600 or 1000 are generally more significant.
